Fairfield Rotary Club records, 1939-1995.

Administrative records; newsletters; membership material; programming material; photographs; and records of two individuals who served in various offices. Also contains records of the Fairfield Rotary Foundation (1965-1989), including legal documents; articles of incorporation and by-laws changes; information on scholarships and grants (1965-1979); complemented by proposals submitted to the Foundation for grants (1989); papers of William J. Clarke, who served as president of the club in 1960, and also worked on youth programs, fund raising, and secured speakers for regular meetings. He collected correspondence, program flyers, and his own working papers. Alan D. Loeser's notebook of material documents his year as club president (1981-1982). Materials were removed from the looseleaf binder according to the subject divisions he made; all of the correspondence, speeches, minutes, news releases, and published information was kept in the original reverse chronological order; photographs, some taken by Clarke, together with press releases and newspaper clippings announcing club projects and activities (1971-1989); and awards given to the club (1976-1986); and directories, handbooks, and manuals published by Rotary International for use in the individual clubs (1958-1989).

Clarke, William J., 1915-1997

William Clarke was born in New York City and graduated from the Taft School and Yale University. He was the former plant manager of Handy & Harman and was active in a wide variety of civic and cultural affairs. After his retirement in 1976 he pursued his interests in photography and poetry.
